This is not an ordinary art class.
This is a step-by-step Icon Painting workshop.
Suitable for intermediate students or for those who would like to be guided step by step to make sure that they know the process of writing an icon. It will deepen your skills and help you to develop new ones.
This time we will be painting an icon of Mary of Egypt who was a hermit.
Who is the Course for:
- those who did at least one Course with us
- those who have painted at least one icon
- those who have artistic experience
- More in-depth understanding of egg tempera and methods used in icon painting
- Master Russian method that includes the application of thin layers of paint
- master working with lights to build shapes
- Deepen your spiritual practice
- Gold leaf gilding using caramel glue which is called “suslo” in the Russian tradition of iconography. It will be a new precipice added to your skills.
We would like to introduce more about meaning of icons to you as well.
After all icons are sacred images with complex theology. Icon in Eastern Tradition cary an essential role in making the divinity available for the worshiper.
In this course you will learn more about the meaning and symbolism of gestures and colours in iconography. Also we will touch a little bit of the history that is connected to styles in icon writing.
Save your space to dive deeper into the beautiful practice of iconography.
The course will include demonstrations of every stage of creating an icon.
Basia will guide you in the way that you will be able to introduce your ideas into the image.

Students will be guided to complete their icons in a traditional Russian method.
Stages of work include:
- Transfering the image onto tracing paper. We will use tracing paper not only to transfer the design but also to learn and explore the shape and the line.
- Transferring finished drawings onto a panel covered with layers of gesso.
- Redrawing with paint. At this stage, students will start learning how to make paints using egg yolk and dry pigments.
- Once all surfaces are covered with enough layers of ground we can start building shapes using lights. In icon painting, we don’t build shapes with shadows.
- Gilding – For those who would like to include gilding this process will be included. You will have choice of doing it with or without it. We will be working for real gold leaf. You will be guided step by step in this process to learn the traditional method of gilding. We will be working with oil gilding.
- Applying final lights and highlights. Finishing.
- It is recommended to wait at least a few weeks before varnishing the finished icon painted in egg tempera. Guidance and demonstration will be provided.

You can either use the materials that you already have. Or equire mateirals from the list below. Please contact us if you need advice.
Materials needed for the Course:
You don’t need all materials for your first session. It will be an introduction. Please contact us if you want to sign up but not sure if you manage to get all materials before the start of the course.

- A4 tracing paper
- Brushes – squirrel – sizes 2,3,5 and kolinsky size 1 (recommended kolinsky brush https://www.jacksonsart.com/jackson-s-kolinsky-sable-brush-round-size-1. Or Rooubloff Brushes.
- Pigments – basic set – Titanium white, Cadmium Red Light, Yellow Ochre, Ultramarine Blue, Green Oxide, Red Ochre, Cyprus Burnt Umber, Italian Raw Sienna, Cadmium Yellow Deep, Mars Black or Black Iron Oxide.
